I am a churchless Christian who has gone through a lot of the thought processes you have blogged about in the 28 years since my own conversion to Christianity at age 14 (no missionaries involved, just God, but how hard is it to find a Christian community where you don't have to agree with all their particular doctrine to be accepted, yet still find a vibrancy in the church services...).

I spent a lot of time teaching in Catholic schools, where I was very comfortable, including in church services, and I've not been able to go to a Protestant service since without feeling something is missing. However, I have issues with the "higher-up" career Catholics and some points of doctrine, and had I been born Catholic, I would actually just be like many in the congregation who have similar issues - but of course you can't convert with them. I have met so many monks, nuns, priests and Catholic laity who to me exemplify the Christian life, and I have a huge soft spot for Catholicism, and some other forms of Christianity.

Catholicism doesn't get into the unnecessary disputes with science and intellectual pursuits which mark fundamentalist Protestant churches, and doesn't subscribe to the clearly illogical "sola scriptura" position - and that's great. Also, it does social justice very well, and isn't as egocentric about personal salvation and the "ticket to heaven" as Protestantism.

I've just finished reading the entire Catholic canon version of the Bible - and boy, are Protestants missing out, some of that deuterocanonical stuff (Apocrypha) is really super. Contrary to popular Protestant attitudes, the Bible did not just drop out of heaven (OK, I'm satirising here), and the human editorial process behind it in my view was not God-given and infallible. I'm also reading the Gnostic gospels and other Dead Sea scrolls material, because I find Christian history fascinating, and these documents at the very least thought-provoking on a literary level. But you know, when I recently applied to be a "new believer befriender" with an evangelical organisation, I got knocked back for refusing to see the Gnostic gospels as works of Satan! Honestly.

Thanks again for sharing and best wishes for your spiritual journey.

God bless

Sue

Sue Coulstockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01562789921827079241noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-43825961410136144072013-12-17T11:47:21.173-05:002013-12-17T11:47:21.173-05:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.TMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01550682162539502048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-50222569699474864702013-10-18T07:12:55.533-04:002013-10-18T07:12:55.533-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11651566419698656864noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-38044974440948873202013-05-15T23:45:53.734-04:002013-05-15T23:45:53.734-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.TMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01550682162539502048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-62750413277831863892013-05-09T10:57:51.242-04:002013-05-09T10:57:51.242-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-40582550739822717072012-07-03T16:54:33.381-04:002012-07-03T16:54:33.381-04:00While I was a student at Southern Baptist seminary...While I was a student at Southern Baptist seminary I crept into Holy Spirit church too! It could be my own but when I joined RCIA and went through the first Rite of Acceptance, my husband wrote me a 3 page letter telling me basically our marriage of 32 years would be over if I continued. I felt the Lord speak to me and tell me to "wait out of holy obedience and He would speak to my husband in those places no man can speak to." I am still at that place where I read the books, articles and even go to Mass occasionally. I have read "Dark Night of the Soul" and "Born Fundamentalist, Born Again Catholic." I have also read "Rome Sweet Home" and the "Surprised by Truth" books. I used to avidly watch EWTN but the conflict was too much. I get The Journey Home newsletter and emails which is where I read your story. I still have hope that I will be able to enter fully into the One True Church. Appreciate all prayers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-73205883507908646242012-05-28T17:10:01.215-04:002012-05-28T17:10:01.215-04:00Yes, Amen! I'm a Catholic in faith/belief though not really a practicing one.

How did I find your blog? I heard about Pat Robertson's reprehensible advice that a man should divorce his wife with Alzheimer's and was so disgusted, I turned to the web to try to make sense of this. I "randomly" came upon a blog (Southern Baptist, I believe)--"randomly" because I must've only found it by God's grace--and saw your comments there with a link to this blog.

I found myself nodding in agreement to so much you have written here. It has been some time since I've contemplated the beautiful mysteries of our faith, and I'm grateful that you shared your story. It has stirred something in me. I'm feeling inspired, a reconnection with my faith. It wasn't what I was expecting when I sat down at the computer tonight, but I'm grateful I found your blog. Thanks again and may God continue to bless and keep you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-42184223058432695822011-09-12T20:17:03.580-04:002011-09-12T20:17:03.580-04:00hello -hello -TMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01550682162539502048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6632882812806452283.post-34203452351703374262011-09-12T18:14:32.062-04:002011-09-12T18:14:32.062-04:00Hello...?
